Statement On Local Death in Haiti
Wednesday, January 13, 2010 4:00 pm
My thoughts and prayers are with the Martin family, and with all of those who have suffered as a result of this tragedy. I have been in direct contact with the family to offer whatever help and support I can offer in conjunction with our Government's Emergency Response Team in Ottawa.
This disaster demonstrates how much smaller our world has become. Although I did not know Yvonne personally, there are ties between our extended families that go back many years.
Yvonne was in Haiti to help set up mobile clinics. This need still exists, and is more urgent than ever. Our Government will match your donations!
Canadians can donate to experienced humanitarian organizations with a record. For a variety of reasons, cash donations are the fastest, most efficient way to get help to those living in the disaster zone. Foreign Affairs Canada maintains a list of such organizations on their website, www.international.gc.ca, in the section on the Haitian Earthquake. I encourage you to share generously.
Once again, I extend my thoughts and prayers to the Martin family, and to all those affected by this tragedy.
