"Canada will emerge stronger," Harold Albrecht, Member of Parliament, Kitchener-Conestoga Ottawa, Ontario — Today’s budget is good news for people seeking employment, and for businesses looking to prosper through Canada’s economic recovery, said Kitchener-Conestoga MP Harold Albrecht.
“Tax relief, improvements to EI, and supports for traditional and new economy jobs are all critical elements to a sustainable, recovery. Canada will emerge stronger and better-positioned for the 21st Century Economy.”
While some Opposition parties were calling for tax increases, Albrecht believes that following through on the tax cuts announced in Canada’s Economic Action Plan will play a vital role in keeping Canada’s economy on the track to recovery.
“In the short-term, tax increases take money away from consumers, money that Canadian families - and the Canadian economy desperately need. And in the long-term, as the Governor General said yesterday, tax increases are simply an excuse for a federal government to avoid controlling spending.”
Most importantly, said Albrecht, the budget presented a clear, prudent plan to eliminate the deficit.
“We will see the deficit cut in half by ending temporary stimulus measures. We will also restrain government spending, and review government spending.”
Albrecht believes the people of Waterloo Region will see the wisdom in this plan for jobs and growth.
“The week before Parliament resumed, I met with hundreds of consituents across the riding over coffee. Some wanted the government to cut spending enough to eliminate the deficit overnight. Others wanted us to spend as if the deficit was not a concern. I think Minister Flaherty struck the right balance for Canada.”
