Statistics Canada reported yesterday that employment in Canada increased by 43,000 jobs in January, considerably better than market expectations of a 15,000 job increase. This helped lower Canada's unemployment rate to 8.3% "These numbers confirm that Canada's Economic Action Plan is working," said Harold Albrecht, MP for Kitchener-Conestoga. Â "This is the fourth month of job gains in the past six months."
Groups like the International Monetary Fund continue to predict that through Canada's Economic Action Plan, Canada's economy will lead the G7 through 2010 and 2011.
Despite the good news, Albrecht remains cautious.
"We are weathering the current global crises better than every other industrialized country, but our recovery remains fragile," Albrecht commented, adding that, "Prime Minister Harper has repeatedly said that our government will not be satisfied until those Canadian who have lost their jobs are working again."
Moving forward, Albrecht outlined three priorities Canadians can expect to be addressed in  Phase II of Canada's Economic Action Plan:
- rolling out the remaining stimulus projects across the country;
- planning for deficit reduction once the recovery has taken hold; and
- building on a strong foundation for job creation and sustained economic growth.
